What could travel look like?

What could travel look like in 2021/22? The roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccines brings renewed optimism and it’s the question we’re all asking. This year is much the same as 2020 so far although there’s certainly fresh hope for future travel. Since restrictions were introduced, we’ve relished exploring places close to home but like everyone else, we miss travelling and exploring new destinations. With the situation changing so rapidly, it’s impossible for anyone to predict what travel will look like even in 2021 but we can ponder. Staycation, road trip or short-haul flight to a favoured destination? Or what about an activity holiday, villa trip or planning that bucket list destination?

Dreaming of the mountains

One of our favourite moments of the day was early morning before any of our fellow campers were up. The three of us would watch the sun work its way down a nearby mountain, hitting the valley just as we devoured the remains of our breakfast. It was a fantastic way to start the day before heading off to explore what the Swiss Alps had to offer.

Best Places to visit near Calais

We’ve had a few road trips to France over recent years. The Pas-de-Calais and Côte d’Opale (Opal Coast) is easy to get to from the UK, either via Eurotunnel or ferry. Travelling in your own car certainly has its benefits, aside from the obvious packing highs, it makes camping and exploring that much easier. We’ve pulled together a round-up of our favoured places along the Opal Coast, some of which make good stop offs if you’re driving through France and neighbouring countries.

Camping essentials for families

Last summer we embarked on our first family camping trip. We had no experience of pitching a tent, what we needed (over and above the obvious!) or what we might have to purchase. Thankfully we did a alot of research beforehand and much of what we took, other than food, borrowed or purchased on the cheap! Aside from our Vango tent (which we reviewed), we didn’t want to purchase much given we’d not camped as a family before.

Our campsite of choice was in Switzerland, we opted not to go local, so we took the Euroshuttle from Folkestone to Calais and drove through France to the Swiss Alps. While it was great having our own car and cramming it with our belongings (and enough food to feed a small army), we learnt the hard way that we didn’t actually need as much as we took. Here’s a list of our essentials which you can cherry-pick from to suit your needs. We’ll be packing lighter for our next camping trip that’s for sure!

Driving to Switzerland: An itinerary

Lots of you have asked about our family road trip to Switzerland but let’s be honest it was EPIC! We hiked to the most stunning lakes, took in the breathtaking scenery and felt like we were on top of the world. Not only that it was our first time camping (as a family) and the site we stayed at had the most spectacular mountain views whichever way we looked. Having breakfast while watching the mist rise from the peaks and the sun hit the valley was the best. But what about the journey there? There are hundreds of kilometres between the UK and the Swiss Alps so here’s how we broke up the drive.
